The Madison Mini scenic 5K course weaves through the beautiful University of Wisconsin Campus and along Lakeshore Path.
5K Start Time: 7:00 a.m. CDT
5K Start Location: The 2020 Madison Mini 5K will start at 7:00 a.m. on Park Street at the bottom of Bascom Hill at State Street Mall. 5K participants can only access the start from the north. Please enter at the corner of Park and Langdon Streets. Please reference revised map. The 5K start will not be corralled. It will be an “honor system start” so if you run at a slower pace, please kindly start toward the back. The 5K start will be funneled at the start to reduced the bottleneck on the initial narrow turn onto the University sidewalk. This is intentional so that participants have a positive race experience. Remember, your time does not start until you cross the timing mat.

Mile Markers/Split Times
Each mile marker will have a large display clock that will indicate the running time of the event. These display clocks will show the time from the official start of the race, not your personal time. A system has been developed to display the mile marker sign, clock and colored warning flag. As you pass each mile marker, you will see an information station providing you with race status. You will know where you are on the course, the official race time and race conditions.
Medical assistance will be available on the route along with a fully-equipped medical facility located near the finish line provided by Madison Emergency Physicians.
IMPORTANT: Each participant must complete the medical information form on the back of your bib number. Please take time to fill out your medical information and provide emergency contact information. This will make your important health care information available to health care professionals in the event you are unable to communicate with them.
The Madison Mini 5K course features two on-course Water Stations to help you along the way at miles 1.75 and 2.5. There is also an Water Station at the Start/Finish. The Water Stations feature water, Gatorade and Port-o-lets.
The portable toilets will be located at each water station.
For your safety and for the timely reopen of the streets to vehicular traffic, you must reach key locations by specified times or you will be required to take transportation provided. Partial lane closures will be utilized. Please stay inside the cones and obey all public safety officers and course marshals. PLEASE DO NOT START EARLY! Traffic and safety rules prohibit early starts. Early starters will be eliminated from the Official Results. If you cannot maintain a 16-minute mile pace, you will be required to board the support buses. The SAG (Support) Wagon and Back of the Pack Crew signage will signify the end of the field and the maximum 16-minute mile pace.
Flag Warning System
A simple flag warning system along the Madison Mini course will alert participants of weather or course-related issues. Flags will be located at each Mile Marker and Aid Station along the course.
Green Flag: Everything is normal.
Yellow Flag: The heat index is at a point where participants should slow down and drink plenty of water.
Red Flag: Dangerous weather. Participants should slow down and take plenty of water. Timing of the event has stopped and no awards will be given out at this time.
Black Flag: Race has been canceled due to extreme weather or course emergency. Events such as a lightning, tornado or human disaster have or are occurring and all participants need to seek shelter immediately or turnaround and head to the Start/Finish line.
There will be 3 short air horn blasts every 30 seconds at each mile marker to notify runners the flags have been changed. In the event of a flag change, Pace Team Leaders will slow their speed and encourage participants around them to slow down and drink plenty of water. At this time, Pace Teams and Leaders sole responsibility is to monitor pace for safety.
